Baker Bounces Back: Community Rallies After the Storm
Neighbors helping neighbors in the aftermath
BAKER — When the storm rolled through Okaloosa County, Baker felt it. Trees came down across roads, power lines snapped, and families woke up to a community that looked different than it had the night before.
But Baker didn't wait for someone else to fix it. Within hours, neighbors were out with chainsaws clearing roads. Church groups organized food and water distribution. Local businesses opened their doors to anyone who needed a place to charge a phone or cool down.
"That's just Baker," said one longtime resident. "We take care of each other. Always have."
Okaloosa County crews worked around the clock to restore power and clear major roadways. Most residents had power back within 48 hours, though some rural areas took longer.
The Baker Volunteer Fire Department and local emergency management teams coordinated with county officials to prioritize the most vulnerable residents — elderly neighbors, families with young children, and those with medical equipment that required electricity.
As cleanup continues, the spirit of Baker shines through. Debris piles line the roads, but so do the people working to move them. If you need help or want to volunteer, reach out to your neighbors — they're already out there.
